SUMMARY:SIWA Monthly Book Club: A DISTANT & BEAUTIFUL PLACE by Yang Kwija
DESCRIPTION:Our Book Club is coming to the last piece  of 1 year’s reading list and what would be a better ending than a collection of interconnected short stories from none other than the place we all call home\, Seoul\, South Korea. Written by Korea’s most cherished and respected author\, this book is set up in a distant and beautiful neighborhood of Wonmi-dong before the country was democratized in 1987. From the lightning speed of industrialization and economic development in the 1980s\, these stories capture Korea in its transformation to modernity with its characters striving for a successful and a better life. Each story is  unique in their own way and yet form together a captivating novel as a whole. \nShort story names: \n\nA Distant and Beautiful Place (멀고 아름다운 동네)\nThe Spark (불씨)\nThe Last Land (마지막 땅)\nThe Wonmi-dong Poet (원미동 시인)\nA Vagabond Mouse (한 마리의 나그네 쥐)\nOn Rainy Days I Have To Go to Karing-dong (비오는 날이면 가리봉동에 가야 한다)\nBellfinch (방울새)\nThe Tearoom Woman (찻집 여자)\nOur Daily Bread (일용할 양식)\nThe Underground Man (지하 생활자)\nCold Water Pass (한계령)\n\nJoin us this October to discuss this book and learn more about the life of people in this city in the era of 1980’s and to shape our future in this city. Don’t forget to submit your recommendation for the next SIWA reading list! \nAs of October we will meet in a new location due to the construction work in our regular venue. \nThe new venue is PAUL BASSETT HANNAM and we will meet on the 4th floor to have our quiet space for great conversations. 🙂 \nEvent date & time: 2023.10.13. 10:30 – 12:00 \nEvent host: Sejung Jang\, bookclub@siwakorea.com  \nVenue / meeting spot: Paul Bassett Hannam \, 폴바셋 한남 커피스테이션점 서울 용산구 한남대로 48 \nNaver map: https://naver.me/x3qL1MkV   \nAdditional Information: BC events are exclusively for SIWA members.

SUMMARY:SIWA Monthly Book Club: “COMO AGUA PARA CHOCOLATE” by Laura Esquivel.
DESCRIPTION:“A tall-tale\, fairy-tale\, soap-opera romance\, Mexican cookbook and home-remedy handbook all rolled into one\, Like Water For Chocolate is one tasty entree from first-time novelist Laura Esquivel.” —San Francisco Chronicle \n  \nComo Agua Para Chocolate whose literal translation in English is ‘Like Water for Chocolate’  is a very common Spanish phrase which means one’s emotions are on the verge of boiling over and cannot be controlled.  \nThis story is about Tita who has strong cravings for her lover Pedro\, but can never marry him because her mother forbids it and cites a family tradition where the youngest daughter has to stay single and must take care of her mother until she dies. Tita is extremely saddened to know this and is only able to express her emotions by cooking food  which is also transferred into the hearts and minds of people who eat it. \n \nHow will Tita’s life unfold? Will she  be able to break the shackles of her mothers tyrannous tradition? Will Tita and Pedro ever get together?  \n  \nJoin us this September to discuss this  book on love\, passion\, rebel\, self growth and food! \n  \nThe book is divided into 12 chapters and each comes with a Mexican recipe which correlates to a specific event in Tita’s life. \n  \nEvent date & time: 2023.09.08. 10:30 – 12:00 \n  \nEvent host: Sejung Jang\, bookclub@siwakorea.com  \n  \nVenue / meeting spot: Paris Croissant Hannam-dong \, 서울 용산구 독서당로 78 (한남동) 청화빌딩 \nNaver map: http://naver.me/xaP7LmuL  \n  \nNr of participants: no limit \n  \nTicket price: free \n  \nAdditional Information: BC events are exclusively for SIWA members.  \n  \nIf you want to plan ahead\, next month’s book is “A DISTANT AND BEAUTIFUL PLACE” by Yang Kwija

SUMMARY:SIWA Monthly Book Club: “THE STATE OF AFFAIRS - Rethinking Infidelity” by Esther Perel
DESCRIPTION:“Love is messy; infidelity more so. But it is also a window\, like no other\, into the crevices of the human heart.”  Esther Perel \n  \nThe emblematic couple’s therapist and bestselling author\, Esther Perel is recognized as one of the world’s most original and insightful voices on personal and professional relationships.  In “The State of Affairs – REthinking Infidelity”\, she examines modern relationships through the lens of infidelity \n  \nThis non-fiction book is not evidence based scientific survey nor a sociological study\, rather it is based on real life stories from Perels’ 30-year long  work with couples. She takes you on a journey to understand the pain caused by  infidelity in relationships\, the dilemmas couples go through before\, during and after the affair\, the questions one asks from themselves and the ones one gets from friends\, family\, the personal and cultural expectations towards relationships and the various facets of the situation from each individual’s perspective. \n  \nOften\, people judge the person who has committed infidelity and see the partner as the victim. But\, every story has 2 sides to the coin.  \n  \nDoes infidelity have a general definition? Do we know what it means? Or is it different for everyone?  \nWhat are the motivations and emotions underlying infidelity? Why does it hurt so much? Is there an affair-proof relationship recipe? Can we love more than one person at the same time? Can we love and trust again after infidelity? Can it help to improve relationships? \n  \nCome this August to discuss this compelling book and understand the complexities of love and desire. \n  \nEvent date & time: 2023.08.11. 10:30 – 12:00 \n  \nEvent host: Sejung Jang\, bookclub@siwakorea.com  \n  \nVenue / meeting spot: Paris Croissant Hannam-dong \, 서울 용산구 독서당로 78 (한남동) 청화빌딩 \nNaver map: http://naver.me/xaP7LmuL  \n  \nNr of participants: no limit \n  \nTicket price: free \n  \nAdditional Information: BC events are exclusively for SIWA members.  \n  \nIf you want to plan ahead\, next month’s book is “COMI AGUA PARA CHOCOLATE” by Laura Esquivel

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Exploring K-Art & Culture: Guided tour at Seodaemun Prison History Hall
DESCRIPTION:>>> ANNOUNCEMENT: \nThe event is CANCELLED due to unforeseen circumstances. \nThank you for your understanding  and we are looking forward to seeing you soon at our other events. \nK-art & culture exploration event will be back in September with details available soon in our calendar. <<< \nNational Liberation Day of Korea is celebrated every year on the 15th of August. On August 15th\, 1948\, the Republic of Korea was officially established. Marking this special day\, we will learn about the value of freedom and peace visiting Seodaemun Independence Park\, Seodaemun Prison History Hall and the gate of Independence. Through a guided docent tour\, we will learn about the history and sacrifices made by Koreans toward democracy and freedom. \n  \nSeodaemun Prison was built by the Japanese Empire to house political prisoners and independence activists during their occupation (1910-1945). Eighty years later\, the prison was turned into Seodaemun Independence Park on August 15\, 1992 to commemorate the Korean patriots. The Seodaemun Prison History Hall is a museum and memorial that honors those who suffered and gave up their lives for Korea during the Japanese occupation. \n  \nThe Independence Gate was built as a symbol of Korea’s independence. Measuring 14.28m high and 11.48m wide\, it is the first Western-style building in Korea modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in France\, and was designated as Historic Site No. 32 on 21 January 1963. Located near Seodaemun Prison History Hall\, Dongnimmun Gate was constructed to commemorate Korea’s long- standing desire for freedom and independence. \n  \nJoin us this month to celebrate South Korea’s National Liberation Day (15th August) by learning about its treacherous history and honoring the brave. \n  \nAfter each K-Art & Culture Exploration SIWA event usually there is an unofficial part of the program\, which is up to the participants to stay for a coffee or a lunch. So you might want to have a bit more spare time on that day.  \n  \nThe event is open to SIWA members and their guests!  \nRegistrations and payments need to be made by August 8th. \n  \nEvent date & time: 2023.08.10. 10:00 – 12:00 \n  \nEvent host: Yashu Sitani\, hospitality@siwakorea.com \n  \nVenue: 251\, Tongil-ro\, Seodaemun-gu\, Seoul \nSubway: Take Subway Line 3 to Dongnimmun Station (Exit 5) \n  \nNaver map: https://naver.me/FaSypwqZ  \n  \nMeeting spot: We will meet in front of the main entrance of Seodaemun Prison History Hall at 9.50 AM so we can start the tour on time. \n  \nTicket price: Adult (age 19-64): 3\,000 won \n  \nNr of participants:  max 10.  \nThe event is open to SIWA members and their guests. \n  \nIMPORTANT NOTE FOR PAYMENT:  \nIf you wish to make a payment through our website\, please make sure to use a credit card issued outside of South Korea\, as currently Paypal and its credit card system do not accept South Korean credit cards. \nWith South Korean bank account and credit card you can make your payment via Bank transfer: \n\nBank Name: KEB Hana Bank\nBank Account #: 359-910024-03504\nAccount Name: SIWA (시와)\nDescription: *please add your name*_EVENT NAME\n\n  \nAdditional Information:

SUMMARY:SIWA Monthly Book Club: “A HEART OF DARKNESS” by Joseph Conrad
DESCRIPTION:This month we come up again with a timeless classic – ‘Heart of Darkness’. It is a story within a story. The novel begins with a group of passengers aboard a boat floating on the River Thames. One of them\, Charlie Marlow\, relates to his fellow seafarers an experience of his that took place on another river altogether—the Congo River in Africa\, where he was appointed captain of a river steamer. He sets out for his journey in Africa optimistic of what he will find.  \nAlthough his job was to transport ivory downriver\, Marlow developed an interest in investing in an ivory procurement agent\, Kurtz\, who is also a government agent and has established himself as ‘God of natives’ . But Marlow suspects something else. What would it be? \n  \nJoin the journey of captain Marlow in the interiors of African Jungles and also the interiors of the human psyche. What do you think is more dark?  Is there really a difference between ‘civilized people’ and ‘Savages’? Are there any parallels between ‘The greatest city on earth’ and ‘The darkest of Jungles.’  \n  \nCome this July to know more and discuss the voyage of Captain Marlow\, as he sets his sail in the direction of  colonized Africa.  \n  \nEvent date & time: 2023.07.14. 10:30 – 12:00 \n  \nEvent host: Sejung Jang\, bookclub@siwakorea.com  \n  \nVenue / meeting spot: Paris Croissant Hannam-dong \, 서울 용산구 독서당로 78 (한남동) 청화빌딩 \nNaver map: http://naver.me/xaP7LmuL  \n  \nNr of participants: no limit \n  \nTicket price: free \n  \nAdditional Information: BC events are exclusively for SIWA members.  \n  \nIf you want to plan ahead\, next month’s book is “THE STATE OF AFFAIRS” by Esther Perel.
