SUMMARY:Climate Fiction & You - Accelerating Solutions with Dr Imai Jen-La Plante (GCF)
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is increasingly visible around the world and close to home. It can be overwhelming to consider the speed\, impact\, and irreversibility of the changes\, from extreme weather to rising water levels to loss of biodiversity like coral reefs. The global scale of climate change makes it difficult to wrap our minds around such big challenges and find solutions. \nWhat if we could each understand climate change in simple and specific terms and explore ways to adapt quickly and avoid the worst effects? Climate fiction (“cli-fi”) is a fun and empowering tool to do so! \n \nOur guest speaker\, Dr. Imai Jen-La Plante\, will share with you this emerging genre\, and how it can set us on a path to a better future for humanity and other life on Earth. \nImai earned a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago and is currently Principal Data Scientist at the Green Climate Fund (GCF)\, the world’s largest climate fund\, headquartered in the Republic of Korea. \nShe combines a passion for innovation and technology with experience in both the public and private sectors\, and previously worked as Chief Innovation Officer at a Swiss financial services firm and Senior Manager for a global technology company. Having lived in 6 countries across 3 continents\, Imai is committed to solutions that leverage international collaboration\, partnerships\, and knowledge sharing. \nJoin us for this inspiring talk with Imai while enjoying a dinner at the Cheese Flo restaurant with the participating SIWA members. \n  \nEvent date & time: 2023.02.17 19:00 – 21:30 \n  \nEvent host: Yashu Sitani\, hospitality@siwakorea.com \n  \nVenue / meeting spot: Cheese Flo (치즈플로) \nItaewon-ro 49gil 19\, Yongsan-gu\, Seoul (서울 용산구 이태원로49길 19) \nNaver map: https://naver.me/GAijpXni \n  \nNr of participants: 15 \n  \nMembers ticket price: 65.000 KRW (52.88 USD) \nNon-Members ticket price: 72.500 KRW (58.89 USD) \nThe ticket price includes a sharing set dinner menu\, but not the drinks. SUMMARY:SIWA Monthly Book Club: “INTO THIN AIR” by John Krakauer
DESCRIPTION:As the great publishing house Penguin Random House says\, “Into Thin Air” is the epic account of the storm on the summit of Mt. Everest that claimed five lives and left countless more—including Krakauer’s—in guilt-ridden disarray.”   \n“A harrowing tale of the perils of high-altitude climbing\, a story of bad luck and worse judgment and of heartbreaking heroism.” —PEOPLE \nThe author\, Jon Krakauer tells his and fellow climbers’ story about the 1996 Mount Everest disaster\, in which eight climbers were killed and several others were stranded by a storm. He takes the reader on a journey that describes the events leading up to participating in the commercial expedition and commercialization of the highest mountain on our planet. Him being there on the mountain provides a great deal of insight into what went wrong. \nIn 1999\, Krakauer received an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters “to honor writers of exceptional accomplishment.”  According to the Academy “Krakauer combines the tenacity and courage of the finest tradition of investigative journalism with the stylish subtlety and profound insight of the born writer.  His account of an ascent of Mount Everest has led to a general reevaluation of climbing and of the commercialization of what was once a romantic\, solitary sport; while his account of the life and death of Christopher McCandless (“Into The Wild”)\, who died of starvation after challenging the Alaskan wilderness\, delves even more deeply and disturbingly into the fascination of nature and the devastating effects of its lure on a young and curious mind.” \nRead this gripping story for our February Book Club  \n  \nEvent date & time: 2023.02.10 10:30 – 12:00 \n  \nEvent host: Sejung Jang\, bookclub@siwakorea.com \n  \nVenue / meeting spot: Paris Croissant: Hannam-dong\, 서울 용산구 독서당로 78 (한남동) 청화빌딩 \nNaver map: http://naver.me/xaP7LmuL  \n  \nNr of participants: unlimited \n  \nTicket price: free \n  \nAdditional Information: BC events are exclusively for SIWA members.  \n  \nIf you want to plan ahead\, next month’s book is “ALMOND” by Won-Pyung Sohn.

SUMMARY:MONTHLY BOOK CLUB - January
DESCRIPTION:These long winter evenings might be the perfect time to cozy up on the couch with some good books in hand. One can surely pick new stories or decide to reread favorites or discover “old” hits…sometimes it might be hard to make the choice\, but you can always rely on our Book Club’s selection. \nThis month’s book: “The time keeper” by Mitch Albom was first published 10 years ago\, but it still stands the test of time and can inspire today’s readers with the simple and modern “fairytale” about the meaning of time. This compelling and uplifting story might make your reading time fly by or drag it along. \nJoin us in person and let us know how was your time with this book! \nEvent host: Sejung Jang\, bookclub@siwakorea.com \nNOTE: BC events are exclusively for SIWA members. \nIf you would like to plan ahead\, next month’s book is “INTO THIN AIR” by John Krakauer.
