SUMMARY:NFTs in the fashion realm
DESCRIPTION:“NFTs in the fashion realm – the world beyond digital art ” tech-talk and wine with Carolina Rios at Le Moulin Seorae \nSince the sale of the first NFT for only $4 in 2014 during a live presentation at the New Museum in New York City\, the so-called Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) market reached $16 billion in valuations\, while statistics expect the industry to amount to $122 billion by 2028. \nNFTs are digital tokens that prove the ownership of an asset\, which is also in the digital space. Nowadays in the fashion industry NFTs embody the hottest commodities\, reconstructing the paradigm between tech innovation\, sustainability\, and style\, blurring the boundaries between real and virtual interactions with textures\, garments\, and accessories. \nMainstream interest in NFTs elevated the market growth of the fashion industry by 21\,000% in 2021. From Louis Vuitton to Gucci\, Dolce & Gabbana and Burberry to Coach\, Mango\, Nike\, and Adidas\, fashion brands do not cease to invest and explore ventures in this virtual space to introduce NFTs across their product ranges\, marketing campaigns\, and customer experience. \nClearly NFTs have exploded in popularity\, but what’s all the hype about NFTs? What financial and social value makes NFTs so attractive to be nominated as the “Big Thing” of the decade? \n  \n \nOur guest speaker Carolina Rios will navigate you into the world of this provocative tech field and business field. She will explain  the application of NFTs to the fashion industry and some of the economic\, social\, and environmental incentives behind NFTs in fashion\, one of the coolest emerging trends in the blockchain ecosystem. \n  \nCarolina\, a former SIWA leader\, is currently the director of partnerships at Klaytn\, the blockchain initiative of Kakao Corporation\, where she supports the global expansion efforts to the markets in Europe\, USA and Latin American markets. \n  \nJoin us for this informative  tech-talk while enjoying a casual dinner with a few glasses of wine at the Le Moulin Seorae.  The ticket price includes set menu dinner with 3 glasses of french wine. In case if you wish to order on top of that\, you can do it at your own expense. \nThis event is open to members and non-members. \nNote: Pre-registration and payment is required by midnight September 15\, 2022. \nEvent Host: Sunghwa Han\, SIWA president  \npresident@siwakorea.com \n  \nVenue: Le Moulin Seorae \n17\, Sapyeong-daero 22-gil\, Seocho-gu\, Seoul 06576 South Korea \n서울 서초구 사평대로22길 17 지하1층 \nNavermap link: http://naver.me/IDSk31IL

SUMMARY:Korean Heritage Tour in Seongbuk-dong
DESCRIPTION:Explore some of the highlights of Korean Heritage in Seongbuk-dong\, where you will get a chance to visit Gilsangsa Temple\, one of the oldest ones in Korea and the Korean Stone Art Museum. After learning about Korean history and culture\, you can also enjoy a tasty traditional lunch together with your SIWA friends. \nGilsangsa Temple has a fascinating history\, as once it was one of the foremost yojeongs (courtesan houses)\, where powerful men visited and used to convene businesses behind the scenes. The temple is named after the woman who donated the buildings\, a gisaeng (a highly-trained female entertainer and courtesan) named Kim Yeong-han\, who had a change of heart after reading “Non-Possession” by Venerable Beopjeong Sunim. The monk initially denied her request but\, in 1995\, decided to turn the buildings into a temple. As a result\, the temple has a very unusual atmosphere because it kept many of its original features. The temple is highly regarded for its involvement in cultural exchanges with other religions and programs to help visitors experience Buddhism. Its light and shade\, hills and valleys combine in perfect harmony here. \nhttps://www.theseoulguide.com/gilsangsa-temple/ \nAddress: 68\, Seonjam-ro 5-gil\, Seongbuk-gu \n  \nKorean Stone Art Museum is a good starting place to learn about Korean stone sculptures and what the stone sculptures were used for. The museum was founded by a successful businessman (also the museum’s Chairman) who is nationalistic and determined to keep Korean stone sculptures. Some of the collections are national assets taken out of the country. He even managed to buy back some from overseas collectors and bring them back home. The founder’s mission was to introduce the aesthetic beauty and significant cultural values of old Korean stone sculptures. This museum relocated from the old one to Seongbuk-dong\, surrounded by a beautiful Bugaksan Mountain and the Seoul City Wall. The exhibition includes ancient-stone artifacts\, traditional embroideries\, and modern Korean paintings. \nhttp://www.koreanstonemuseum.com/bbs/board.php?bo_table=pe_b01_01 \nhttp://www.koreanheritage.kr/inside/view.jsp?articleNo=35 \nAddress: 66\, Daesagwan-ro 13-gil\, Seongbuk-gu \n  \nEvent host: Bockhee Lee\, SIWA’s Cultural Connections Committee Chair \nbockheelee2012@gmail.com \n  \nVenue: Gilsangsa Temple & Korean Stone Art Museum \nMeeting point: We will meet in front of Hansung University Station (Exit 6) at 9:40 am.  \n(transportation: Please take subway line number 4 to Hansung University Station and walk out to Exit 6)

SUMMARY:Book Club: "I am Malala" by Malala Yousafzai
DESCRIPTION:A MEMOIR BY THE YOUNGEST RECIPIENT OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE \nAs seen on Netflix with David Letterman\n“I come from a country that was created at midnight. When I almost died it was just after midday.” \nWhen the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan\, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. \nOn Tuesday\, October 9\, 2012\, when she was fifteen\, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school\, and few expected her to survive. \nInstead\, Malala’s miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen\, she became a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize. \nI AM MALALA is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism\, of the fight for girls’ education\, of a father who\, himself a school owner\, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school\, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons. \nI AM MALALA will make you believe in the power of one person’s voice to inspire change in the world. \n  \nThe exact zoom address will be announced when it’s ready. \nNote: BC events are exclusively for SIWA members.
