“A tall-tale, fairy-tale, soap-opera romance, Mexican cookbook and home-remedy handbook all rolled into one, Like Water For Chocolate is one tasty entree from first-time novelist Laura Esquivel.” —San Francisco Chronicle
Como Agua Para Chocolate whose literal translation in English is ‘Like Water for Chocolate’ is a very common Spanish phrase which means one’s emotions are on the verge of boiling over and cannot be controlled.
This story is about Tita who has strong cravings for her lover Pedro, but can never marry him because her mother forbids it and cites a family tradition where the youngest daughter has to stay single and must take care of her mother until she dies. Tita is extremely saddened to know this and is only able to express her emotions by cooking food which is also transferred into the hearts and minds of people who eat it.
How will Tita’s life unfold? Will she be able to break the shackles of her mothers tyrannous tradition? Will Tita and Pedro ever get together?
Join us this September to discuss this book on love, passion, rebel, self growth and food!
