This month we come up again with a timeless classic – ‘Heart of Darkness’. It is a story within a story. The novel begins with a group of passengers aboard a boat floating on the River Thames. One of them, Charlie Marlow, relates to his fellow seafarers an experience of his that took place on another river altogether—the Congo River in Africa, where he was appointed captain of a river steamer. He sets out for his journey in Africa optimistic of what he will find.
Although his job was to transport ivory downriver, Marlow developed an interest in investing in an ivory procurement agent, Kurtz, who is also a government agent and has established himself as ‘God of natives’ . But Marlow suspects something else. What would it be?
Join the journey of captain Marlow in the interiors of African Jungles and also the interiors of the human psyche. What do you think is more dark? Is there really a difference between ‘civilized people’ and ‘Savages’? Are there any parallels between ‘The greatest city on earth’ and ‘The darkest of Jungles.’
Come this July to know more and discuss the voyage of Captain Marlow, as he sets his sail in the direction of colonized Africa.
